 Oxides

Definition, symbolism, nomenclature and classification of oxides:

Oxides:

The compounds of elements with oxygen are called.

Most oxides have the general formula:Σ2Ox

Where, x is the oxidation number of element Σ.

Classification of oxides:

Oxides, depending on their chemical behavior, can be distinguished into acidic oxides, basic and epamphoteric oxides.

Acidic oxides:

They are mostly non-metal oxides. They arise from the corresponding oxygen acids by removing, in the form of water, all the hydrogen atoms they contain.

Thus, to find the anhydride of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) we subtract one molecule of H2O from one molecule,H2SO4 so,  SO3.

That is, H2SO4 - H2O → SO3

Basic oxides:

They are usually metal oxides and examples of such oxides

Basic oxides arise from the corresponding bases by removing, in the form of water, all the hydrogen atoms they contain.

e.g.

Ca(OH)2 - H2O → CaO

2NaOH - H2O → Na2O

Fe(OH)3 - 3H2O → Fe2O3

Epamphoteric oxides:

It is the oxide that sometimes behaves as an acid and sometimes as a base. This behavior is determined by the nature of the substance with which it reacts.
