Salts
Symbolism and nomenclature of salts:
Salts:
They are ionic compounds containing cation M (metal or positive polyatomic ion) and anion A (non-O metal or negative polyatomic ion).
Thus, the general formula of salts is:MψAx
Where, x and ψ indicate the ratio of anions and cations in the ionic compound.
The saltscan be distinguished into:
a. non-oxygenated salts
b. oxygen salts
Characteristic properties of salts:
Salts, as ionic compounds, are strong electrolytes. For this reason, aqueous solutions, as well as their melts, are good conductors of electricity. In general, salts have high melting points and many of them are readily soluble in water.
